Helms Bakery opened its doors in 1931 with 32 employees and 11 delivery coaches.

Helms Bakery coaches made daily bread deliveries even before the freeways were built — often taking as long as one hour to reach their destinations.

Helms delivery coaches traveled as far north as Fresno and as far south as San Diego.

The bakery’s famous motto “Daily to Your Door” proudly proclaimed the daily service provided to LA residents.

Helms Bakery was the official baker for the 1932 Olympic Games in LA. The Olympic symbol can still be seen on the building’s historic sign.

The Helms Bakery building is an excellent example of Zig-Zag Moderne architecture.

The Helms Bakery building actually straddles two cities: Culver City and Los Angeles. In fact, Paul Helms’ desk straddled both cities as well.

In 1997, the Helms Bakery building was officially named a landmark structure by Culver City.

The original Helms Bakery rooftop sign was fully restored in 2003 and continues to light up the evening sky.

Former employees of Helms Bakery continue to meet for the annual summer picnic.

Astronauts aboard the 1969 Apollo mission enjoyed Helms bread as part of an advertising promotion.

On hot days, Helms coach drivers would sometimes give away doughnuts to neighborhood kids rather than have them go bad in the un-air-conditioned delivery trucks.

Households would place a blue cardboard “H” in their windows if they wanted the Helms coach to stop at their house.
